There used to be quite a few options for doing videocapture in os x. But thanks to some opensource drivers you can get a huge number of cheap webcams running on your mac. Check out the macam driver: Also if you have one of these cards there is a commercial driver which lets your use it in OS X. XLR8 InterView.

Are there any other good video solutions for mac? Yesterday i spent a couple hours purchasing, testing, and then returning a dazzle capture for mac.
I think it was a dmz-170. This particular interface internally compresses video into mp4 files, and wont actually stream video to the computer. Right now im working with a unibrain firei (thanks csugrue!!) but want to upgrade to a more versatile capture setup.

I find the fire-i is a little noisy and hard to mount. In terms of capture cards to run with the usbvision drivers, do people have any preference?
I was at j&r yesterday, and there is quite a selection. Any other suggestions are appreciated!
I have just purchased Dazzle Video Creator Platinum HD after being advised to get it by a staff member at an Apple shop. When it was delivered it states on the pack it is only compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. I don't have parallels on my mac and was hoping I could load dazzle without purchasing parallels and windows. I dont want to unpack Dazzle and try as I may not get a refund. Can you advise if Dazzle is compatible with Mac OSX 10.6.3 and if not what I should do to be able to use Dazzle on my MAC? Thanks MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3) Posted on Jan 25, 2013 7:26 AM. It has been a while since I have used any Pinnacle software.
I first bought their hardware (A-D/D-A converter) to use on Windows many years ago (at least 8 years). I seem to recall that the Dazzle line was a 'Windows only' prodcut, but I'm not positive there. I'm not sure what Dazzle gives you that you don't have with iMovie on your Mac (other than that you can run it on Windows). You might want to go back to the Apple Store where the staff member told you to buy it and ask them how you are supposed to run it on your Mac. If they suggested that you buy it, they might have information on how to use it with your Mac. Personally, I would consider returning it and look at using iMovie to get yourself started, and maybe look into something like Final Cut form Apple if you need 'more horsepower'. Well, your MacBook Pro should have iMovie already installed, and that along with an analog to digital convertor is all you really need. If you get yourself a Digital8 camcorder (I have a Sony one) you can connect the 'iLink port' to your MacBook Pro with a FireWire cable, and then iMove can connect to the camera and even control the tape playback/pause options.
I have done this myself a few times. When I first started converting some old 'out of print' VHS tapes to DVD for my wife's classes many years ago, I purchased the Pinnacle MovieBox DV which was my analog-to-digital convertor. In fact, this old box still works today other than it only works in SD (no HD here).

The Movie Box DV that I have is hard to find now, and it is no longer officially supported, but they are very solidly built and seem to last forever if you can get one. I had to go the route of the external hardware for convertign the old VHS tapes due their having MacroVision encoding on them, and the hardware I bought will ignore that. Jan 26, 2013 6:32 PM.
