I thought it was her strongest effort since her Come Away With Me album, though I felt some songs were really trite and should have been left off, like 'Out On The Road.' 'She's 22' and 'After The Fall' we're stand out tracks for me. I'm glad you enjoyed it though:thumbsup 'She's 22' is so damned good. In the review I wrote, I said it is her Sea Change. It's not quite as awesome as that record, but it's exactly the shakeup her music and her career needed.

This is a good analogy. They sound nothing alike, but they both employ the kind of drastic change in style and sound fitting with something like an an artist making an album written in the wake of the breakup of a long-term relationship.

I actually think Nigel Godrich would have worked much the same result with Norah Jones as he did with Beck. Listened to about 5 different Foo Fighter albums tonight. These guys may not be cool and indie, or P4k bff's, but they can rock out. I am amazed that the entire Wasting Light album was recorded in their garage in mono. Yeah, some of the tracks are filler, but they still write impressive songs that probably translate very well into a live performance. I definitely get a little tired of Dave Grohl's musical motifs, like the predictable rise and falls of his vocals, the musical bridges that are a little formulaic, or his lyrics that can at times be really, really corny, but still these guys are a very solid band putting out consistently good releases.

Their catalog is full of great tracks. I know they are very popular and this thread tends to dwell on relatively less popular band, but Foo Fighters is definitely a good band. Anyway, thats sorta all I had to say.:lol 'Everlong' has been, and will probably always be my favorite Foo Fighters track. There's no hipness factor, they're just a great rock and roll band that writes great songs. The 'Back and Forth' documentary that came out recently was absolutely excellent and gives great insight into the band.

I have massive respect for Dave Grohl as a musician. My favorite album of theirs, while not the most popular pick, is 'Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace', I love each and every track. :thumbsup I just love the Foo Fighters. I grew up on these guys and in two weeks it will really be a dream come true for me. They are playing on the beach in my hometown Asbury Park, and because I'm friends with the guy putting the festival together, I get to meet the band at the after-party. I do love 'Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace', but I am super biased towards 'The Colour and the shape'. It was one of those albums I just had on non-stop when it came out. When I would have to leave my room, I would pop it out of the CD player and throw it in my walkman.

Just foo 24/7.:monkey. :thumbsup I just love the Foo Fighters. There's no hipness factor, they're just a great rock and roll band that writes great songs.

If so, I've enjoyed the couple of times I've spun that record. If not, my bad. You all look the same here. Did you sum me Jackie Greene? If not, my bad. You all look the same here. /nr:lol Yes, that was me. Glad you enjoyed, I really love that record, the front half especially. I can sum you his previous album 'American Myth' if you're interested - much more acoustic flavor on that one. (IMO kind of like the difference between North Hills and Nothing is Wrong with Dawes.) He also has an awesome 3 song EP of Grateful Dead covers called 'The Grateful EP' that you can download for free from his site.

It's not as highly regarded as some of their others, but this is still hip hop done right. I don't listen to the genre by choice, but our local hip-hop/R&B station is the consensus vote for radio station in my work area, so I have no choice. All I know is, kids today, they don't know what real music is. /old man rant I love the way they brought back their NYC hardcore roots on this album but still managed to spin a lot of great sampling into it, particularly from 70s funk. 'Root Down' playing right now. Love the live Fender Rhodes on the track. Starting with Paul's, no group how to do sampling as well as they did.

It's not just to build a hook; that's cheap and easy. They made it an art form. And now 'Sabotage', which goes without saying, kicks ass. Total sidetrack, but I just noticed that Orbital has a new record out as of last month. When they announced their split 5 years ago, I thought The Blue Album was a fitting cap to their career, but I'm dying to know what this new phase of the group has in store.

If you try something bold and daring in your 20s or 30s, you're respected as trailblazers and pioneers. When you try daring new stuff in your 40s, you're desperate to stay hip. I'm not saying I agree with that, but I'm saying that tends to be the perception. From that perspective, though, I think they were wise to kinda keep it old school. That's so true, well said. Even if they just liked the sound of mainstream hip hop and wanted to try it, they'd be labeled as sell outs and what not. They had a great career, sad to see it end with the passing of MCA.

Just got back from seeing Iron and Wine and it was amazing. For Iron and Wine fans though, he played a new song (I think it was called Winter Promises) and said that he had just finished recording a new album:eek.

The song was really beautiful, just like the whole show. I know it sounds cliche, but it was just so intimate. Was really a hell of a show. Met some awesome people and got Sam Beams attention with a sign for 'Faded From the Winter'.

He said he didn't want to butcher it, so he didn't play it.:( Couldn't really ask for more though. Keane - Strangeland Unsurprisingly predictable and below average.:thumbsdow I still love Hopes and Dreams but they have not put out an album anywhere near Hopes and Dreams since. Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls First track was great, but after a while the album became a little repetitive. Some of the tracks reminded me of Marvin Gaye(is that weird?). Overall, great tracks mixed in with skippable tracks. I'm hoping these guys put out a more solid album in the future, I like their southern rock/blues sound a lot. Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator Anybody know some similar music to this, really enjoying this album.

What do you like about it the most? There's so many directions you can go with it. Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi solo are obviously similar, and if it's guitar solos you can also check out guys like Warren Haynes, Joe Bonnamass, etc. If you like female singers with a country vibe you check out like Loretta Lynn, Bonnie Raitt, etc Or guys singing the same vibe stuff like Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, etc. Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator Anybody know some similar music to this, really enjoying this album.

Feel pretty much the same though there were only a few standouts to me.

Lower Dens Nootropics This is another LP that could use a couple more peaks and valleys. Takes a while to really figure this thing out because the pacing is a bit flat for me.

'Brains' is phenomenal, though. Ward A Wasteland Companion Not bad, but not very good either. I don't really care for the very straightforward 50's rock/doo vibe on some of the more upbeat tracks. I was going to suggest Songlines by Derek Trucks Band What do you like about it the most?

Can't go wrong with Warren Haynes' 'Man In Motion' or 'Live at the Moody Theater' for the guitar. These two new AC songs are INSANE. I can't even pick which one I like better.

I am loving all the lush sounding guitars. Sounds like they reverted back to their pre-MPP song to a degree with these. Cannot fathom that anyone that is a fan of AC finding any sort of faults with these songs. Honeycomb sounds like some sort of crazy trip on drugs. Reminds me of Water Curses to a degree. Gotham is kind of this slow burner that just builds up into quite jam.

Honeycomb is current favorite, but I can see me growing the other direction after future listens. Wondering if these are gonna be on the new album or what. But I am excited as hell now for this new album. Honeycomb - Gotham - http://www.mediafire.u926lbcmebefn1s. These two new AC songs are INSANE.

Guess thats what happens when you post while blasting AC through headphones.massive breaks in concentration:lol.

Also haven't posted in awhile so I am going to vomit all over this thread but: Craft Spells EP is all sorts of AWESOME. Just a short collection of six kick-ass songs Ramona Falls: Don't get the hate on here. Just finished listening last night, and I thought it was great. Gonna be on heavy rotation for me. Best Coast: Didn't expect much, was pleasantly surprised. Really quite enjoyable.:thumbsup i dig.

'Gotham' definitely gives me that 'Street Flash' vibe from Water Curses (which IMO has some of my favorite AC music, great EP). Hope this means that the new LP will be coming in the fall. Yeah, when I posted the link and said 'definitely sounds like Passion Pit', I wasn't being overly positive. It sounds like treading water. Now, an EDM band who I would have loved to have just tread water, but ended up making a switch, was Justice. If their last album had been † 2.0, it would have been top 10 last year without a doubt.

Hopefully they get back to more of that sound, after whatever it was they were going for on Audio, Video, Disco. And, to whoever asked about MGMT, they have a self-titled album coming out this year. I never really cared for Passion Pit before that song, but 'treading water' sounds exactly right. Just about the most by-the-numbers electro-pop song ever.

And as to your point about Audio, Video, Disco. Yeah, it sucked. Father John Misty Fear Fun Really enjoyed this after the first couple of listens.

'Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings' and 'Only Son of the Ladiesman' were absolutely excellent songs. Really enjoy Tillman's lyrics and voice, and the sound is so classic without sounding like a dated imitation. Might have to search out the LP. Daughn Gibson All Hell I could only describe this is as dark country downtempo. Certainly this gets points for its uniqueness. The atmosphere is very moody, dark, and gray and though it is a cohesive, well-conceived and executed LP, its drabness does hold it back somewhat for me.

Worth checking out, particularly for the excellent 'A Young Girl's World.' I give a little more slack to bad sophomore efforts, tbh. I know for some artists there's no excuse, but MGMT is a prime a example of 'we had our whole lives to make our debut perfect but we had a year and a half after touring to make our second one, fuck you' Syndrome. Bands just need to take their time with second albums. That doesn't guarantee it'll be good, but it's a reason a lot of sophomore efforts are bad. Or bands could use their whole lives to create a first album and then have some left over songs ready for the next album. I give a little more slack to bad sophomore efforts, tbh.

Better to take your time & have it be better, than try to keep the hype rolling and force out another album quickly. Or you can take the Ryan Adams route and just release everything all the time including 3 albums in one year:lol That doesn't work for many artists though.

Definitely give the new album a listen then, I enjoyed it far more than I did Swoon. The opening track 'Skin Graph' has you rocking out right away.

NP: Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods. Started it this morning, and I didn't finish it. It's a long album (almost an hour), my drive to work took only about 45 minutes, and I had to contend with awful traffic in a bad rainstorm on the way home, so I couldn't pay attention to much more than the news on NPR.

What I heard of it, I liked, but I didn't love it. I enjoyed Swoon much more off the bat than this one, which actually feels like the band is stuck in a bit of a holding pattern. No new ground is broken, and they don't take a lot of chances as far as coming up with new trippy sounds.

Going from Carnavas to Swoon was a much bigger leap than from Swoon to this, which might even be a step backwards. There's nothing nearly as dynamic or wild-sounding on this as, say, 'Panic Switch' on Swoon. Need to finish it, but that's my initial impression.

I liked Busy Bee, but thought it was pretty forgettable other than that. Shows little growth if any. The songs are awfully long for ones that are so directionless. What's everyone's favorite ambient songs? My top three are: 1.

The Big Ship, Brian Eno 2. Heliosphan, Aphex Twin 3. Daydream, Tycho Not sure as I've ever sat down and thought about actual song titles when it comes to ambient music.

I just like to put the albums on and trip out. As far as that goes, The Orb's album Live '93 has probably wall-to-wall the best collection of ambient songs in one set, basically a 'best of' sampling of their first three albums (even though the third one wasn't out yet), all given extended-length live treatment. I seem to recall a tune called 'Plateau' being particularly cool on it. Found a studio version of it on YouTube (The live version totally owns it. I can't imagine doing that from such a public platform. Good for her, though. It'll be interesting to see if she stays active with the band. Will certainly make for interesting discography listening a few years in the future, as she will be going through hormone treatments, and all the voice changes that come with that.:lol Good for her!

That takes a lot of courage. Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods. Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News NP: Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls. Really like the new Ben Folds Five single. The one problem I have is a production thing, and it's one that has been an issue for me with at least Way To Normal. I don't like the vocal in such an explicit forefront.

I can't really describe it well, but to me it sounds like the vocal is recorded in a studio apart from everything. In albums I fall head over heels for, things blend in a much better way. I'm not sure if it's just Ben's vocals or the mixing itself, but I get this feeling of him singing to a track (rather than a band playing all together) that I don't get in most other recorded music.

Or maybe I'm just nuts, either. Either way, really dig the song and looking forward to the album. Started it this morning, and I didn't finish it. Why can't a band know who they are and put out a kickass album? Why does there always have to be 'Growth'? My album of the day.:thumbsup:thumbsup Such a fun album.

Everyone should listen to the new S. It's only 4 songs, but really good.:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup Good to know he has new material, I'll be checking this out later. Lone - Galaxy Garden. Holy crap. No doubt this is one of my favorites for this year.

It sounds so fresh. Not sure what genre this is, but some crazy mix of house, UK Funky, and IDM with spacey ambience on some tracks.

This is definitely unlike anything else I've heard so far for 2012.:thumbsup EDIT: I should also add the album cover for Galaxy Garden is so perfect for this style of music.
